Welcome!!

Welcome to I Love Sociology! I am excited to share my love of sociology with you all.

One of my favorite theorists is Marx, so it makes sense talking about his work today. Marx talks about why people work—it is fundamentally because we are paid wages in exchange for our labor. This was why I talked about Sociology every day for the past twenty years.

Now I have the privilege of sharing it here with you. Just because I love sociology and I want to share it with others.

In the past year Sociology has come under fire for the ways the discipline looks at topics such as sex, gender, race, and ethnicity. In some places in the US, it is getting difficult to teach about these topics. In other places, Sociology is being removed from core course requirements.

When it is harder for people in some places to talk about Sociology, it is important for those of us who can talk about it to keep doing our best to fully and accurately keep talking about sociological knowledge.

Today I talk about sociology not because I receive wages to do it, but because I want to help others to grow in their understanding of “relationships that are unique to groups of people” (Peter Blau).

Examining relationships between groups of people is always important. It helps us understand how to move through our social lives. When people in power are trying to keep us away from that knowledge, it is only more important for us all to seek out knowledge about social life and learn how we interact with and relate to each other.

I hope you will keep coming back to share your knowledge and maybe learn something new too.
